Length and height - Assessment
Maths Resource Description
The Length and Height Assessment for Year 1 students is a practical exercise designed to evaluate their understanding of measuring and comparing lengths and heights. In this assessment, children are presented with a variety of tasks involving common objects and illustrations. For example, they may be asked to identify the tallest teddy bear among a group, or to measure objects using paperclips as a non-standard unit of measure. The assessment includes filling in blanks with the correct number of paperclips or centimetres to indicate the length or height of an item, as well as drawing comparisons between two items, such as determining which is taller or shorter.
Additional tasks in the assessment require students to engage in activities like drawing a flower shorter than the one provided, and completing sentences by choosing the correct comparative word (taller or shorter) based on given measurements. To demonstrate their understanding, children must also calculate the combined length of multiple items, such as erasers, by multiplying the length of one by the quantity. The assessment is designed to be interactive and confidence-building, with a section where students can circle how confident they feel about the topic. Finally, true or false questions and prompts to circle or tick the correct answers help educators gauge each child's grasp of length and height concepts.
