Place Value within 20 - Compare groups of objects - Starter
Maths Resource Description
For Year 1 students in the Autumn Term, Week 12, Day 1 focuses on enhancing their understanding of place value within 20 through a series of engaging activities. The session starts with a 'Fluent in Four' revision exercise, where children are encouraged to practice their quick-fire arithmetic skills. They will require 10 counters for hands-on learning, aiding in visualising and comparing groups of objects. One of the exercises includes a calculation challenge where students need to double the number 4 and then add half of 12, fostering their ability to perform simple mathematical operations and understand the concepts of doubling and halving.
The lesson continues with a variety of questions designed to test and expand the children's number sense. They are prompted to identify a missing number from a given pattern, which helps them to grasp the idea of 'one more' and 'one less', essential building blocks in the understanding of number sequences and place value. Additionally, the children are invited to spot occurrences of the number '3' and to recognise different shapes on a colouring page, linking numeracy with early geometry skills. These exercises are crafted to make learning interactive and enjoyable, while also reinforcing their counting and recognition abilities. The session concludes with an arithmetic problem where children practice addition by working out the sum of 8 and 6, further solidifying their understanding of number combinations within 20.
