Place Value within 20 - Tens and ones ten frame - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In an engaging starter activity designed for Year 1 students during the Autumn Term, children are introduced to place value within the number 20, focusing particularly on understanding tens and ones using a ten frame. The activity, titled 'Fluent in Four - Revision', requires children to have a set of 10 counters at their disposal. This hands-on approach encourages them to visually represent numbers and perform simple calculations to reinforce their understanding of basic arithmetic and place value.
The tasks involve a variety of exercises that prompt the children to use the ten frames to show numbers and solve problems. For instance, they are asked to calculate half of 8 plus half of 2, and to add three to five. These activities are designed to help students recognise patterns and develop their mental arithmetic skills. They are also encouraged to continue given patterns and to determine what number is two more than another, always ensuring the results are less than 16. The exercise advances to more complex problems such as finding a number equal to ten plus one, plus another one, and then adding two more. By engaging with these problems, students learn to visualise numerical relationships and enhance their number sense within the context of place value.
