Place Value within 20 - Count and write numbers to 20 - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In the initial stages of the Year 1 Autumn Term, Week 11, Day 1 lesson, young learners are introduced to the concept of place value within the number range of 20. The session begins with a 'Fluent in Four' revision exercise designed to consolidate their numeracy skills. This interactive activity requires each child to have 10 counters at their disposal, which they will use for a series of calculations and problem-solving tasks. The exercises are carefully structured to develop their understanding of basic arithmetic operations and to recognise patterns and shapes within a given set.
The children are tasked with using their counters to perform simple calculations, such as doubling the number 3 and then adding 3, to reinforce their addition skills. They are also presented with challenges that involve identifying the odd one out among a group of shapes, continuing a sequence, and working with larger numbers by finding the largest in a series, doubling it, and recording the new number. These activities are aimed at enhancing their counting abilities, introducing the concept of doubling, and encouraging logical thinking as they answer each question. The lesson is designed to be engaging and supportive, allowing children to build confidence in their mathematical abilities through hands-on learning and exploration.
