Place Value within 20 - Compare numbers - Presentation
Maths Resource Description
In a mathematics lesson focused on place value within 20, students are encouraged to enhance their number comparison skills. The lesson utilises fluency and reasoning teaching slides to guide students through comparing numbers using the greater than ( > ), less than ( < ), and equals ( = ) symbols. The students are first asked to recall the meaning of each comparison symbol. They then participate in interactive activities where they must identify the greatest number in a set by circling it. These activities involve comparing numbers both in numeral and word form, such as determining whether 'Twelve' or 'Twenty' is larger, or which is greater between the numbers 8 and 17.
Further activities require students to use a number track to compare two numbers and determine which one is smaller and by how many. For example, they compare 13 and 17, and 12 and 15, using the number track to visually aid their understanding. In addition to these exercises, the students are challenged to complete statements that involve swapping numbers around and observing the effect on the comparison sign. They also engage in reasoning tasks, such as deciding how many sweets could be in a jar given certain conditions, and filling in gaps with numbers that meet specific criteria. The lesson concludes with independent work where students circle the correct numbers, use comparison symbols to make statements accurate, and discuss the concept of comparing numbers.
