Addition and subtraction within 10 - Taking away - Starter
Maths Resource Description
On Day 2 of Week 8 in the Autumn Term for Year 1, students are presented with a series of exercises to sharpen their skills in addition and subtraction within the number range of 10. The lesson begins with a 'Fluent in Four - Revision' activity, where children are encouraged to use 10 counters to help them solve subtraction problems. This hands-on approach aids in visualising the concept of 'taking away' and reinforces their understanding of basic subtraction.
The lesson includes practical and engaging tasks such as completing sentences and part-whole models to further grasp the subtraction process. For example, students are asked to consider a scenario where there were 8 birds in a tree and all 8 flew away, prompting them to fill in the blanks to reflect the subtraction story. Another activity challenges the children's comprehension of division and grouping, as they assess Tia's statement about dividing her 8 apples into groups of 2. The children learn that Tia would actually have 4 groups, not 2. These exercises not only solidify their arithmetic skills but also develop their problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
