Place value within 10 - Order numbers - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In the Autumn Term of Year 1, Week 4, Day 2 of the curriculum, students engage in a series of maths activities designed to strengthen their understanding of place value within 10 and ordering numbers. The lesson begins with a 'Fluent in Four' revision session where children are provided with 10 counters to assist them in their calculations. They are tasked with solving simple subtraction problems, such as finding the result of 10 minus 9, and then determining the correct sequence for these numbers, ordering them from least to greatest. Additionally, students practice their doubling skills and identify errors by spotting mistakes in given calculations. The activity is structured to encourage group participation, with students working in three different groups to foster collaborative learning and problem-solving.
Continuing with the 'Fluent in Four' revision on Day 3, the children use their 10 counters to further their understanding of basic arithmetic operations. They calculate expressions such as half of six plus double one, and add together 3 and 4. The session also includes practical applications, asking students to count items like carrots and corn on the cobs to find total amounts. Critical thinking is encouraged as they determine which group has the smallest or largest number of items. For example, they are given the task of matching Teddy to his bag of 5 apples by comparing quantities in different bags. This hands-on approach to learning maths helps Year 1 students to solidify their grasp of place value and number ordering, while also developing their ability to apply these skills to everyday contexts.
