Step Tenth

Step Tenth is an engaging educational game designed to help children learn how to count in tenths. To play, you'll need a dice labelled from 0 to 9. Players take turns rolling the dice to generate a number with a unit and a tenth place – for example, 6.8 – and then write it down. The aim is to count from either 0 or 10 to the target number, using steps of 1 or 0.1. When counting from 0 to 6.8, you would count in full steps until 6, and then switch to tenths steps until you reach 6.8. This would total 14 steps. Conversely, counting down from 10 to 6.8 involves three full steps and two tenths steps, totalling 5 steps. Players score based on the lower number of steps taken.

The game is not only fun but also educational, as it encourages discussion about the relationship between the units digit and the unit steps, and the tenths digit with the tenths steps. It also highlights the connection with number pairs that sum up to 10, such as 6 and 4 or 7 and 3. For instance, when you add 6.8 and 3.2, the result is 10. The winner of the game is determined after five rounds, with the victor being the player who has accumulated the fewest steps.
