Single Difference - Find the difference between two numbers
Maths Resource Description
The 'Single Difference' game is a fun and educational activity designed to help players practice finding the difference between two numbers. This game is suitable for players who are learning basic subtraction and number comparison. To participate, you will need a 0-9 dice, a digit board, and some counters. The aim of the game is to be the first player to align four of their counters in a row, whether horizontally, vertically, or diagonally on the digit board.
Players take turns to roll the dice twice and calculate the difference between the two numbers rolled. For example, if a player rolls a 4 and a 9, they would find the number 5 on the digit board and place a counter on it, since 9 minus 4 equals 5. In the event that a player rolls a 0, they simply roll again. To assist players in understanding the concept of difference, they are encouraged to count on their fingers from the smaller number to the larger number and to discuss how much more one number is than the other. For instance, stating that "The difference between 9 and 4 is 5, because 9 is 5 more than 4" reinforces the learning objective. This game is not only engaging but also reinforces mathematical skills in a practical and interactive way.
