Number 14 - CanDo Bonds
Maths Resource Description
The CanDo Bonds activity is an engaging and colourful way for children to explore and learn the number bonds that add up to 14. The exercise begins with a "Create it" section where children are encouraged to colour bars to represent seven different ways of combining numbers to make 14. They then complete corresponding number sentences to solidify their understanding. In the "Join it" part of the activity, children complete dominoes, ensuring each pair adds up to 14, and jot down either dots or numbers to visualise the bonds. This section also includes a fun element where children can colour Colin the reindeer's nose if the numbers on his antlers sum up to 14.
Moving on to the "Jot it" section, there's an interactive grid where children can colour boxes that total 14 to create a path, reinforcing their comprehension of number bonds through visual and spatial learning. The activity provides a list of number sentences, some of which are complete and others that require the child to fill in the missing number to make the total of 14. This challenges the child to think critically and apply their knowledge of addition. The "Snap it" section shifts focus to subtraction, where children start with 14 cubes and snap off a certain number to find the remaining total, further enhancing their understanding of how numbers can be broken down and recombined. They also get to draw models to solve real-world problems involving the number 14, which helps them to apply mathematical concepts to everyday situations.
