Max Maths, Year 6, Try it, Equally likely outcomes
Maths Resource Description
In Max Maths for Year 6, students are introduced to the concept of equally likely outcomes through engaging exercises. One such activity involves completing a table that helps them understand the probability of various outcomes. For instance, when rolling an even number on a six-sided die, the possible outcomes are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. However, the equally likely outcomes for rolling an even number are just 2, 4, or 6. This gives the student three chances out of six, or a probability of 1/2, which is equivalent to a 50% chance of rolling an even number.
The activity further explores different scenarios, such as rolling a total of 9 on two six-sided dice, rolling a number less than 6 on a ten-sided die, and picking an 8 or 9 out of a pack of cards. Another situation presented is the probability of selecting a jack, queen, or king from a pack of cards. Each scenario requires the student to identify the number of possible required outcomes and then calculate the probability fraction and its percentage equivalent. The exercise is designed to strengthen the students' understanding of probability and equip them with the skills to calculate it in various contexts. For further practice and detailed explanation, students are directed to their workbook, specifically page 107.
