Max Maths, Year 6, Learn together, Review of perimeter and area (3)
Maths Resource Description
In the Max Maths curriculum for Year 6, students consolidate their understanding of perimeter and area with a review session. The concept of area is described as the amount of surface that a shape covers. For different shapes, there are specific formulas to calculate their areas. For a rectangle, the area is determined by multiplying its length (l) by its width (w), expressed mathematically as Area = l × w. This formula is fundamental as it applies to any rectangular shape, regardless of its size.
Similarly, the area of a square, a special type of rectangle with all sides equal, is found by multiplying the length of one side (s) by itself, giving the formula Area = s × s. This reflects the fact that in a square, the length and width are identical. Additionally, the area of a parallelogram, a four-sided shape with opposite sides parallel, is calculated by multiplying the base (b) by the height (h), which is perpendicular to the base, resulting in the formula Area = base × height. These formulas provide a clear and simple method for students to calculate the area of these common shapes. To further explore these concepts, students are directed to the accompanying workbook page for practice and application.
