In an engaging maths lesson for Year 6 students, the concept of converting fractions to decimals is explored with practical examples. To demonstrate this, the fraction 3/5 is converted into a decimal. Students are reminded that 1/5 is equal to 0.2, a fact they have previously learned. By understanding that 3/5 can be thought of as three 1/5s added together, they can easily calculate that 3/5 equals 0.2 + 0.2 + 0.2, which results in a decimal of 0.6.

Conversely, the lesson also covers converting decimals into fractions. Taking the decimal 0.03 as an example, the students are shown that since 0.01 is equivalent to 1/100, then 0.03 can be broken down into 0.01 + 0.01 + 0.01. By adding the fractions 1/100 + 1/100 + 1/100, they find that 0.03 equals 3/100 as a fraction. Students are then encouraged to apply what they've learned in a series of exercises where they convert decimals to fractions and vice versa. These exercises include converting 0.5, 0.08, 0.75, and 0.05 into fractions and converting 3/20, 7/10, 7/20, and 7/50 into decimals. The lesson directs students to workbook pages 150 to 151 for further practice and consolidation of these skills.
