Max Maths, Year 6, Try it, Recognising equivalence between fractions (1)
Maths Resource Description
In the 'Max Maths' programme for Year 6, students are encouraged to explore the concept of equivalent fractions through a practical and visual approach. The lesson titled "Recognising equivalence between fractions" uses a fraction wall as a tool to help students identify fractions that represent the same value. The fraction wall is a colourful representation where each colour block corresponds to a different fraction, and the length of the blocks can be compared to find equivalences.
The activity starts with a clear example where Han demonstrates the use of the fraction wall. Students are then prompted to find six more equivalent fractions by using the visual aid. For instance, it is shown that one half, represented by a red block, is equivalent to four eighths, as four light green blocks match the length of the red block. Similarly, one third, shown by a purple block, is equal to two sixths, as two pink blocks align perfectly with one purple block. This hands-on exercise not only reinforces the concept of equivalence but also allows students to visualise and better understand the relationships between different fractions.
