In the Max Maths curriculum for Year 6, students are introduced to the properties of quadrilaterals through a practical example involving a kite. In geometric terms, these equal sides are known as adjacent sides because they meet at a common vertex. This observation leads to the understanding that a kite is defined by having two pairs of adjacent sides that are of the same length.

Further exploring the kite's properties, students learn that in addition to having pairs of adjacent sides of equal length, a kite also has a pair of opposite angles that are equal. This means that angle D is equal to angle B. These properties are fundamental in identifying a quadrilateral as a kite. The lesson aims to familiarise students with the unique attributes of kites among other quadrilaterals, enhancing their geometric understanding and ability to recognise shapes based on their specific characteristics.
