Max Maths, Year 5, Practice, 24-hour timetables
Maths Resource Description
In the "Max Maths" workbook for Year 5, students are tasked with the practical application of converting times from 12-hour clock format to 24-hour clock format. Initially, they are presented with 12-hour clock times and asked to write down the equivalent 24-hour clock times. This exercise helps them to understand that each time in the 12-hour clock can correspond to two different times in a 24-hour period, one in the AM and one in the PM.
The practice section, titled "Let's Practise", provides a straightforward conversion task where students must translate given 12-hour clock times into their 24-hour counterparts. For instance, they convert early morning times such as 2.00 a.m. and 3.59 a.m. to 02:00 and 03:59 respectively in the 24-hour format. Afternoon and evening times, such as 5.00 p.m. and 8.00 p.m., are converted to 17:00 and 20:00. The exercise continues with the conversion of late evening times like 10.25 p.m., which becomes 22:25, and 12.00 p.m., which is a bit tricky as it can be either noon (12:00) or midnight (00:00) in 24-hour time. This activity is designed to enhance the pupils' understanding of time and to ensure they are comfortable with both time formats, which is a valuable skill in everyday life.
