Max Maths, Year 5, Try it, Translation
Maths Resource Description
In a practical activity geared towards Year 5 students, the task is to understand and apply the concept of translation on a grid. The grid is a simple coordinate system with numbers running from 0 to 10 on both the x (horizontal) and y (vertical) axes. Students are asked to copy a given shape and then draw the new position of the shape after performing the specified translation.
The translations to be carried out are straightforward: (a) move the shape 4 places to the right, which involves adding 4 to the x-coordinates of each point of the shape; (b) move the shape up by 1 place, which means adding 1 to the y-coordinates of each point. Similarly, students will translate shapes (c) 3 places to the left, which requires subtracting 3 from the x-coordinates, and (d) move a shape down by 1 place, subtracting 1 from the y-coordinates. This activity helps students to visualise how shapes can be moved around on a grid without changing their size or orientation, simply by adjusting the coordinates. Additional practice can be found on workbook pages 216 to 217 to further reinforce the concept.
