Sequence of learning - People and Characters from the Past - EYFS
History Resource Description
The concept of fame is introduced to Reception-aged children as they explore 'People and Characters from the Past' within their Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. The children are encouraged to understand what it means to be famous through a series of engaging activities and discussions. They compare and contrast characters from stories, identifying both fictional and non-fictional figures from various cultures and historical periods. Through frequent sharing of texts, images, and oral storytelling, children start to develop an understanding of the past and present, recognising common themes such as bravery, difficult choices, and kindness, and how these relate to their own experiences.
The proposed learning sequence includes activities that help children talk about the lives of people around them and their roles in society. They begin to notice similarities and differences between the past and present, drawing on personal experiences and class readings. Vocabulary such as 'famous', 'brave', and 'determined' is introduced and discussed in context. Children learn about historical figures like Rosa Parks and the heroes of the moon landing, asking questions such as "Why did Rosa Parks not give up her seat?" and "Who were the heroes of the moon landing?" They are guided to appreciate that many people have taken steps to make the world a better place and to consider what they might change if they were famous. The unit also introduces the concept of a timeline, helping children to place events and people in chronological order.
