Churchill's Speeches - World War 1 and 2 - Year 6
History Resource Description
Year 6 students are invited to delve into the historical significance of Winston Churchill's oratory during critical moments of World War 1 and World War 2. By watching at least two of Churchill's speeches, provided by BBC Teach's Primary History KS2: WW2 Clips, students are encouraged to explore the attributes that made Churchill's speeches so compelling and effective at rallying the British people. The activity prompts a discussion about the techniques and qualities that enabled Churchill to inspire and unite individuals to support and fight for a common cause during times of immense challenge and adversity.
Following the analysis of Churchill's speeches, students are tasked with creating their own persuasive speech on a subject they are passionate about. This could range from advocating for their favourite football team to any other topic they feel strongly about. The aim is to emulate Churchill's persuasive prowess, harnessing the power of words to convince others and win their agreement. The exercise is designed to not only develop students' understanding of persuasive language and public speaking skills but also to provide insight into Churchill's impact on Britain during the wars. The activity concludes with a reflection on the broader effects of the world wars on Britain and Churchill's pivotal role as a wartime leader in World War 2.
