Match up - Ancient British history timeline
History Resource Description
The timeline activity provides a visual representation of key periods in Ancient British history, from the Stone Age through to the 20th Century. Students are tasked with matching historical events to the correct era. The numbers 1 to 6 correspond to the following events: Normans invaded (3), Romans invaded (1), Iron ore was discovered (4), Britons were hunter-gatherers (5), Vikings invaded (2), and the Wheel was invented (6). The pupils have 10 minutes to complete the match-up, with each correct answer scoring them 2 points.
The question regarding the changes in Britain between the end of the Roman occupation and 1066 challenges students to reflect on a significant period in British history. After the Romans withdrew from Britain around the beginning of the 5th century, the country saw a series of invasions and settlements by various peoples, including the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. These groups brought with them new cultures, languages, and technologies that significantly influenced the social and political landscape of Britain. The eventual Norman invasion in 1066 further transformed Britain, introducing Norman governance and feudalism, which reshaped the nation's class structure and land ownership.
