What was home life like for most people who lived during the Victorian era? - Teacher notes
History Resource Description
During the Victorian era, there was a stark contrast in home life between the wealthy and the poor. The homes of the affluent were often spacious and lavishly decorated, equipped with multiple rooms for different purposes such as kitchens, living rooms, and bedrooms. These rooms were adorned with a variety of items and artefacts, which reflected the era's technological advancements and aesthetic sensibilities. On the other hand, the homes of the poor were typically cramped, with very basic and limited furnishings. Many working-class families lived in squalid conditions, often in one or two-room dwellings that served as both living and sleeping quarters. The difference in living standards was a clear indicator of the social divide of the time.
Teachers are encouraged to bring the Victorian home experience to life by showing internet clips that illustrate the day-to-day realities for both rich and poor Victorians. By examining artefacts from the period, children can gain hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of the past. This tactile exploration allows them to deduce the functions of various household items used in Victorian times. Additionally, comparing images of Victorian homes with modern-day homes helps children to identify the main differences and understand how much domestic life has evolved. Through this unit, children will explore how the Victorian era shaped our contemporary living spaces and the lasting influence it has had on our lives today.
