Endangered species examples
Geography Resource Description
Rainforests, the world's treasure troves of biodiversity, are teeming with thousands of unique species. Within the lush expanses of the Amazon basin, countless animals coexist, but many of them face the imminent threat of extinction due to various environmental pressures. To raise awareness and encourage conservation efforts, students are tasked with selecting four animals at high risk of disappearing forever. Working in groups of four, each student is responsible for researching one of the endangered creatures, with the aim of collectively presenting a persuasive argument for the preservation of these species by the end of their unit of study.
Among the endangered inhabitants of rainforests in Africa, Brazil, Sumatra, Borneo, South America, and Central America, several species stand out due to the perilous situations they face. Factors such as the lucrative trade in Golden Lion Tamarin fur, the popularity of Toucans as exotic pets, and the destruction of Poison Dart Frog habitats contribute to their decline. Highlighting the plight of these animals, including Gorillas, Chimpanzees, Orangutans, Jaguars, Harpy Eagles, and others, the educational material urges students to contemplate the factors that give rise to rainforests and their locations, as well as the dire consequences for the endangered species if conservation measures are not taken.
