Where is Kenya and what are its physical features? - Teacher notes
Geography Resource Description
Kenya is a country located on the eastern coast of Africa, known for its striking physical features and diverse landscapes. In an educational setting, teachers can start by introducing Kenya to students through an engaging video that provides an overview of the country suitable for children. Following this visual introduction, the lesson progresses to identifying Kenya's geographical location in relation to the United Kingdom. Students are encouraged to use a world map to locate both the UK and Kenya, enhancing their understanding of global geography.
As part of the lesson, students also explore the broader context of Kenya's setting by identifying the continents of Africa and Europe. This geographical exploration extends to locating all seven continents, including the remote Antarctica, and discussing the world's oceans that would be encountered on a sea voyage from the UK to Kenya. Utilising a globe, the Equator and the North and South Poles are identified, providing students with a visual aid to better understand Kenya's equatorial position. The lesson aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Kenya's location, its physical features such as the Great Rift Valley, its vast savannahs, mountain ranges like Mount Kenya, and its coastal regions along the Indian Ocean.
