Link it! Prior knowledge - Seaside study - Year 2
Geography Resource Description
When embarking on a study about seaside resorts, it's valuable to tap into the wealth of prior knowledge that Year 2 students might already possess. Most children will have some familiarity with what a seaside resort is, often drawing from a range of sources. This existing understanding may stem from earlier educational experiences, such as topics covered in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), or personal experiences, including family trips to coastal destinations within the UK or possibly overseas. Additionally, children's perceptions of seaside resorts are often shaped by literature they've read in school or television programmes they've watched, which portray the bustling atmosphere and scenic beauty of these locations.
To effectively capture and utilise this background knowledge, children are encouraged to document what they already know in the 'Prior Knowledge' section of their Knowledge Organiser. This exercise not only helps to consolidate their understanding but also serves as a springboard for further learning. The question "Why do we like to be beside the seaside?" prompts students to reflect on their own experiences and the cultural allure of seaside resorts. The 'Link It!' activity is designed to connect these personal insights with academic learning, both within the subject of the seaside study and across other subjects, thereby creating an integrated and meaningful learning experience for the students.
