Progression pedagogy - Hot and Cold - Year 1
Geography Resource Description
In a Year 1 educational setting, the concept of recycling is introduced to students as part of a broader unit on 'Hot and Cold'. The teaching strategy employed is designed to ensure that pupils not only learn new information but also retain it effectively. This strategy, described as 'link it, learn it, check it, show it, and know it', guides students through a structured learning process. This pedagogical approach is detailed in the 'Five stages of learning and remembering' document, which serves as a foundation for the curriculum provided by Focus Education (UK) Ltd.
At the outset of the unit, 'Before the learning', children are encouraged to make connections with their existing knowledge, creating a foundation on which new information can be built. 'During the learning', the focus shifts to actively engaging with the concept of recycling, where students explore why it is important for the environment. 'At the end of the learning', there is a phase of consolidation where students check their understanding and demonstrate their knowledge. Finally, 'After the learning', the aim is for students to have internalised the concept so that they 'know it' and can recall the reasons for recycling without prompting, thus making the knowledge stick. This progression within the unit is designed to maximise opportunities for pupils to absorb and remember the information presented to them.
