Words from other Languages Presentation
English Resource Description
A comprehensive presentation by KS2Gems, aimed at Year 6 students, focuses on the spelling of words borrowed from various languages around the world. The presentation serves as a multifaceted educational tool, providing teacher instructions on how to introduce and consolidate the spelling of these words, as well as revising them. It contains a word list, spelling rules, and a range of activities which are adaptable to suit the needs of the class. These activities are designed for whole class participation using whiteboards and can be undertaken individually, in pairs, or small groups. Additionally, there are independent activities that can be completed in exercise books or on whiteboards, offering flexibility in teaching methods.
Within the presentation, students are introduced to words such as 'budgerigar', 'bungalow', 'pizza', and 'theatre', each originating from different corners of the globe. Interactive activities encourage students to discuss and explore the origins of these words, with clues provided for guessing the word and its country of origin, such as 'skis' from Norway and 'cheetah' from India. Further exercises include an anagram challenge, where students unscramble letters to form words from the spelling list, and creative writing tasks, such as the sentence and paragraph challenges, which require the use of a dictionary to check meanings and encourage the crafting of interesting and coherent sentences and paragraphs using the words learned.
