In Session 2 of 'The Snow Spider' reading comprehension, Gwyn awaits a windy day to test if he is a magician as advised by Nain. His father, sceptical of magic due to his own childhood experiences with Nain, reacts poorly when Gwyn inquires about their ancestors. Upon chanting ancient names, Gwyn is surrounded by snowflakes, one of which transforms into a silver spider on his shoulder. Gwyn conceals the spider, fearing his father's disapproval and not wanting to disturb family harmony. The spider exhibits magical qualities, glowing and moving independently, which excites Nain upon discovery. She insists Gwyn keep the spider, named Arianwen, a secret, understanding that others may find it strange.
