Armistice Runner - Session 1 - Worksheet
English Resource Description
The first session of "Armistice Runner" for KS2 pupils delves into Chapters 1 and 2 with a set of discussion questions designed to engage students in critical thinking about the protagonist, Lily. Questions explore Lily's attitude towards training runs compared to competition runs, her reaction to being overtaken by a rival, and her feelings about visiting her grandparents. These questions aim to deepen the students' understanding of the character's motivations and emotions.
Complementing the discussion, the session includes a variety of reading activities that encourage students to interact with the text on multiple levels. They start a timeline to track the story's events, analyse Lily's character, make predictions about her visit to the grandparents, pose their own questions about the story, and work on reading comprehension. The session also focuses on grammar and punctuation, with exercises on the use of hyphens, prepositions, modal verbs, and achieving cohesion across chapters. Additionally, students are introduced to a 'Words to Workshop' activity, where they explore and understand the usage of specific vocabulary within the text. Writing opportunities are plentiful, ranging from diary entries and narrative perspectives to creating a playscript. Cross-curricular links are established with science, history, geography, computing, art, design and technology, physical education, and personal, social, health, and economic (PSHE) education, making the session a comprehensive learning experience.
