Acrostic poetry is a creative and accessible form of expression explored in English teaching resources for Year 5/6 students. An acrostic poem is characterised by its structure, where the first letter of each line spells out a word vertically down the left-hand side of the page. This word, always in capital letters, sets the theme for the poem. Students are encouraged to engage with this literary form by learning the fundamental rules of acrostic poetry, which include the liberty to rhyme or not and the option to employ various poetic devices such as similes, alliteration, and onomatopoeia.
