The educational module for Year 6 pupils places a strong emphasis on cultivating a love for reading and a deep comprehension of a variety of literary forms. Students are encouraged to read and discuss an extensive range of materials, including fiction, poetry, plays, non-fiction, and textbooks, to enhance their literacy skills. The curriculum aims to familiarise them with a diverse selection of literature, such as myths, legends, traditional stories, modern fiction, and works from various cultures. It also focuses on developing critical thinking by having them recommend books, identify themes, compare texts, and learn poetry by heart. Furthermore, the pupils are taught to improve their understanding through questioning, inferring, predicting, summarising, and recognising how language and structure influence meaning. They engage in discussions, presentations, and debates to articulate their comprehension and provide reasoned justifications for their views.
In addition to reading, the module includes comprehensive writing instruction. Pupils plan their writing by identifying audience and purpose, drawing on their reading and research for ideas, and learning from other authors. They draft narratives with rich descriptions and dialogue, and they use various devices to enhance cohesion and structure. The editing process is crucial, with a focus on vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, and tense consistency. Pupils are also taught to write legibly and fluently, with attention to letter formation and the choice of writing implements. Spelling instruction covers prefixes, suffixes, 'silent' letters, homophones, and words that are often confused, with dictionary and thesaurus use encouraged. Grammar lessons include formal speech structures, passive verbs, expanded noun phrases, perfect verb forms, modal verbs, and relative clauses. Finally, they learn to use punctuation effectively to clarify meaning, indicate parenthesis, and list items, while also understanding and using grammatical terminology accurately.
