Inspired by: Greek Myths - Medium Term Plan
English Resource Description
The Greek Myths module for Year 5 students is an immersive journey into the world of ancient legends, retold by Marcia Williams. Over the course of six weeks, pupils will delve into various objectives across comprehension, composition, and grammar and punctuation. In the first week, students will expand their reading repertoire with a range of non-fiction and reference books, including notes about the Olympians and poems about peace. They will also learn to use colons for lists and bullet points. The module encourages students to develop their initial ideas through further reading and research, guiding them to select appropriate forms for their writing, inspired by the myth of the Olympic Flame.
As the weeks progress, students will increase their familiarity with a broad spectrum of books, including classical myths, and enhance their understanding of how language, especially figurative language, contributes to meaning. They will evaluate the impact of language on the reader, discussing and writing narratives that reflect character development and setting, as seen in the tales of Pandora's Box and Arion. Grammar objectives include mastering the use of colons, adverbs indicating degrees of possibility, verb prefixes, and adverbials of time. Pupils will also learn to use commas for clarity and relative clauses effectively. By the end of the module, students will be able to identify themes and conventions in writing and perform their compositions with confidence and clarity, as exemplified by the stories of Daedalus and Icarus and Theseus and the Minotaur.
