The most beautiful ceiling is the one that plainly depicts the truth.

All of the pictures and overlay in this video were taken on my trip to Europe in 2009 (except night sky time lapses filmed in the South Australian desert). My point is this: if "no one could have acted with more piety" then why was Galileo persecuted? If we should "not allow the movement of the Sun and Earth to become a matter of faith," then why was it? The best way to deal with unfortunate history is truthfully, not with propaganda.

Most of the world believed that Earth was the center of the universe for a really long time. Then a few scientists decided to take a closer look.

ELLIPTICAL ORBITS (Astronomy)
With his first law of planetary motion, Kepler rejected circular orbits and showed that an ellipse could better explain the observed motions of Mars. Generalized to all planets, it states that the orbit of a planet follows an ellipse with the Sun at one focus.
Do you know how to draw an ellipse? We show you a neat trick in this video using a piece of string, a pencil, and a couple of pushpins.

EQUAL AREA IN EQUAL TIME (Astronomy)
Kepler’s First Law states simply that Mars travels in an elliptical orbit, with the Sun at one focus of the ellipse.  Although he chose to list it first, Kepler only came to this conclusion after figuring out his "second" law, which says that if you draw a line from the Sun to Mars, and wait a fixed amount of time, that line will sweep out a certain area as Mars moves along its orbit.  This finding was generalized to include all planets in 1621.

LAW OF PERIODS (Astronomy)
Kepler’s 3rd Law is sometimes called The Law of Periods: The square of the period of any planet is proportional to the cube of the semimajor axis of its orbit.  
In this video, we derive Kepler’s Third Law from Newton’s Law of Gravitation. 
We also show you how to use this law to determine the orbit of Mars around the Sun. 
Finally, we apply Kepler’s Third law to the Moon’s orbit around the Earth, using it to calculate the mass of the Earth.
