We hear how the body is 60% water, and how we lose 2-3 litres a day in wee and sweat. We hear how the sweating mechanism and thermoregulation work. Presenter Stefan Gates uses an experiment to demonstrate the chemical composition of sweat, salts of magnesium, calcium, potassium, and sodium. This clip is from the BBC series Gastro Lab. Stars of stage, sport and screen reveal the foods that keep them at the top of their profession, while presenter Stefan Gates explores the world of nutrition with experiments that will make tongues tingle, stomachs churn and hair stand on end. KS3 Biology / KS3 Food Technology / 2nd Level Technologies Students could be asked to keep a diary of how much water they drink every day for one week. They can assess whether they drink enough and increase their rehydration during energetic activities. Have they ever had symptoms of dehydration (headaches, tiredness, fatigue)? They can be asked to make a note of the ways that they might increase their fluid intake, making sure that this does not exceed the requirements or add excess sugary or fatty foods and drinks to their overall diet. This clip will be relevant for teaching Biology and Food Technology at Key Stages 2, 3 and 4 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and 2nd , 3rd and 4th Level and National 4 and 5 in Scotland. ===================== For more clips from other subjects at the BBC Teach YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/bbcteach More from BBC Learning Zone: http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone More resources from BBC Bitesize: http://www.bbc.co.uk/education ===================== Subscribe to create your own customised playlists, and get notified about our latest clips.
