Assessment - Art 1 - EYFS
Art and Design Resource Description
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the art assessment focuses on a child's ability to use drawing as a means to capture and represent the shapes they observe in their environment. Practitioners should observe whether children can effectively use lines to enclose spaces, a fundamental skill in creating recognisable forms. Additionally, it is important to note if children can identify and use various shapes, such as circles to represent heads, to depict different objects.
Beyond shape recognition, the assessment also encompasses the child's engagement with colour. Practitioners should look for the child's willingness to experiment with colour, applying trial and error in their process. It is also key to observe if children understand that colours can be altered, demonstrating this through activities such as colour mixing. The ability to select specific colours intentionally for a particular purpose is another aspect of the assessment. These criteria help gauge a child's developing artistic skills and their understanding of how to represent the world around them through drawing.
